Attitudes and motivation towards learning French in primary school

Abstract Young children have often been shown to be highly motivated towards learning foreign languages in primary school, but for their enthusiasm decrease during secondary schooling. Many reasons put forward, such as novelty wearing off, teaching styles, or societal and peer pressure. Little is known about changes attitudes motivation school aged when these factors are kept constant, the only variable being age of children. The present study investigated differences at two different ages (5 7) a setting. Two intact classes same (53 with no prior knowledge French), taught material by teacher, took part focus groups one-to-one interviews course larger longitudinal project investigating role early classroom learning. Results show that might occur earlier than previously thought, shaped developmental children’s cognitive, social emotional growth. Children young 5 7 were exhibit levels self-regulation, self-efficacy, thought beliefs frames which had direct impact on attitudinal motivational profiles.
